2023 National Scouting Combine Featured Athlete Thomas Pellegrino, DL from Kutztown University

How’d you end up at your current school?

I ended up at Kutztown University from entering the transfer portal out of Bloomsburg University. At Bloomsburg, I spent my 4 years there as a 3-year starter and started as a true freshman with only missing a season due to its cancellation from the pandemic. I stayed within the PSAC conference and found the best opportunity for myself at Kutztown University. I am so thankful that the coaches believed in me and took me in with open arms and ultimately provided me with the greatest season of football I have ever played.

What gives you an advantage over other athletes at (rename this to your position)?

What gives me an advantage over athletes at defensive line is my size, strength, and motor. I may not have the ideal size for a DL but when all my attributes put together, I am lethal. I have a natural center of gravity; I am powerful and stronger than most making me hard to block. With my relentless effort, I certainly possess an advantage that most do not have.

What does being a student of a game mean to you?

Being a student of the game means to me expanding one’s mind. In order to be a successful and smart athlete, you must listen to all pieces of advice from coaches. You must be very coachable and be willing to take what you learn from a coach and apply it on your own time. Study the film, breakdown the tendencies, and breakdown the athletes you are laying against.

How would you describe your work ethic?

I would describe my work ethic as relentless. It was instilled in me at a very young age that you must earn everything that is given to you. I was taught you earn your spot; you earn the right to play, you earn respect and it is all based on how hard you work. If I did not work harder than everyone, I would not be where I am today. Therefore, my work ethic is unlike anyone else’s, I will outwork anybody you put in the room.

What would you consider to be your biggest accomplishment in your sports career so far?

My greatest accomplishment in my sports career would be earning a starting role as a true freshman defensive tackle at a division 2 school. I was able to prove that size does not matter and I was able to play alongside two All- American defensive linemen on a prestigious defense. I proved all the people who said I would never make it at a high level of college football wrong.

How did you hear about the National Scouting Combine?

I heard about the National Scouting Combine from an interview post that was released about me on twitter. Someone thought I was worthy enough to be invited and I was ultimately reached out to by the NSC.

Why did you choose the National Scouting Combine?

I chose the NSC because I believe it is a great place for me to showcase my talent. With 12 years of providing athletes the chance to display their talent it is a great place for me to perform. I believe here wis where I will be able to turn heads and take the next steps in becoming a professional football player.

What do you hope to show people at the combine?

I am hoping to show scouts that although I am undersized, I will show everyone how big my heart is. To be honest I am hoping to prove a lot of people wrong and show that I deserve a shot.

What was your Major?

My degree from Bloomsburg University is a degree in Criminal Justice while also finishing with a minor in Spanish. I also started a Masters in Public Administration at Kutztown University.

If not football, then what?

If I did not have football, I would pursue a career in federal law enforcement. I have always wanted to serve and do something greater than myself and that is serving the community to make it a safer place.
