FORMER NFL DEFENSIVE BACK JERMAINE HAMPTON RETURNS AS COACH FOR THE 2026 NATIONAL SCOUTING COMBINE IN NAPLES
Naples, Florida — Paradise Coast Sports Complex
The National Scouting Combine is proud to welcome back Jermaine Hampton, former NFL defensive back, Jim Thorpe Award finalist, and longtime professional coach and evaluator, as a returning member of the coaching staff for the 2026 National Scouting Combine in Naples, Florida.
With more than 30 years of combined playing and coaching experience, Hampton brings a rare blend of NFL pedigree, professional coaching versatility, and proven player out-placement success across multiple leagues. His return marks his third year working with the National Scouting Combine, where he continues to play a key role in preparing defensive athletes for professional opportunities.
A PLAYER’S MINDSET, A COACH’S EYE
A standout at Northern Illinois University and a Jim Thorpe Award nominee, Hampton went on to play in the National Football League with the Indianapolis Colts, as well as several professional leagues thereafter. That experience continues to define his coaching philosophy today.
“A traditional showcase doesn’t offer half of what the National Scouting Combine does. I’d rank it right behind the NFL Combine.”
“I coach the way I used to play,” Hampton said. “With high intensity, aggressiveness, good character, leadership, hard work, and being a competitor. When I evaluate defensive backs, I’m looking for raw talent — guys who love the game and have all the tools to play the position.”
WHAT TRANSLATES FROM THE COMBINE TO THE NEXT LEVEL
Having served as a defensive coordinator, head coach, secondary coach, and NFL Draft/free agent evaluator, Hampton evaluates prospects with a professional lens that extends beyond times and measurements.
“I look at the character of the player, athletic ability, body frame, highlight film, footwork, hips, and overall Combine grade,” Hampton explained. “From there, I determine what level I see that player playing — whether that’s the NFL, CFL, UFL, IFL, NAL, AF1, or beyond.”
His coaching résumé includes leadership roles across the IFL, NAL, USA Football programs, and the National Scouting Combine, with a consistent track record of helping athletes earn professional opportunities.
WHY THE NATIONAL SCOUTING COMBINE STANDS APART
As a returning coach, Hampton is especially vocal about the value the National Scouting Combine provides to athletes who may not have traditional exposure.
“The National Scouting Combine is a great showcase,” Hampton said. “It gives players from all collegiate levels — especially those without pro days — a real opportunity to showcase their skills and receive an honest grade. It shows players where they rank among elite athletes in the country. A traditional showcase doesn’t offer half of what the National Scouting Combine does. I’d rank it right behind the NFL Combine.”
VERSATILITY THAT REVEALS FOOTBALL IQ
Hampton’s coaching background spans defensive backs, linebackers, special teams, and wide receivers, allowing him to evaluate players from a holistic perspective.
“It’s easy for me to pick a player’s brain just by talking football,” he said. “Then I look at how many positions a player can play to determine where they’ll be most successful moving forward in their career.”
ADVICE FOR ATHLETES CHASING THE NEXT LEVEL
Having been directly involved in player placement to the NFL, CFL, XFL, USFL, and other professional leagues, Hampton offers direct advice to athletes entering Combine week.
“Take advantage of your Combine opportunities — they don’t come often,” Hampton said. “This is a cutthroat business. Take it seriously, check all the boxes, and give yourself the best chance to take your career to the next level.”
GIVING BACK TO THE GAME
For Hampton, returning to the National Scouting Combine is about more than evaluation — it’s about mentorship.
“What excites me most is being around the coaching staff and serving as a mentor to the players,” he said. “I want players to know I’m there for them. This is how I give back to the game that changed my life — for the better.”
National Scouting Combine Founder and CEO Jimmy Kibble added, “Jermaine brings credibility, experience, and real opportunity to our athletes. He understands the professional game and cares deeply about helping players find their path. We’re proud to have him back.”
As the 2026 National Scouting Combine returns to Naples, Jermaine Hampton’s presence ensures defensive players will be coached, evaluated, and mentored by someone who has truly lived the journey — from college standout to NFL player to professional coach and evaluator.
