National Scouting Combine Feature: Mark Austad – Scouting & Recruiting

Mark Austad: 2023 Intern (Scouting & Recruiting)

School: Concordia University | Bachelors in Sports Business

What was your role leading up to the Combine?

“We spent months as interns, my areas were D3 and FCS, that’s what I was canvassing. Jimmy gave me the keys to not only scout and recruit, but I began sending official invites to players as well, so I had a decent hand in that.”

What was your role like at the Combine?

“I was on the offensive side of the ball, I’m kind of a hoo-rah guy, I get amped up. I picked players out that I see potential in, and I’m in their ear, in a good way. I can see potential, I can see players on the field, and I can see things that I want to see out of them… I treat it as if, if I was a scout, this is what I would want to see out of you if I was in the stands.”

“I was brought in to some leadership meetings, some operational meetings with the guys, which was an honor for me, being a first year intern. Jimmy was fantastic the whole time, and bringing me behind the curtain operationally, was pretty huge for me. It was a great experience to listen, and listen, and listen.”

What got you interested in the event?

“I got pointed towards Jimmy and reached out on LinkedIn. It was soon after that that he and I got on a phone call together and I started learning more about the combine and what they offered not only for players, and their intention and mission, but for interns as well.”

What are your sports related goals?

“One of my short term goals in sports is to get in the building, basically, of a professional sports organization, and specifically the Detroit Lions, I live not too far from Detroit… I always told myself whether it was an internship or in scouting, or not in scouting. Operations, or facilities even, I would be in that building, in Detroit, at some point in time.

Long term, I’ve always envisioned myself being a great leader of men and women and having a large impact. I want to have a large impact on people because it’s not just the work that I believe that I can do, but it’s the personal aspect that I think I truly thrive in. I have big visions of me being in the front office, and earning a large and impactful role in an organization.”

What advice would you give to someone trying to get started in the sports industry?

“It takes being relentless, you have to be a ‘why not guy’ and not a ‘why guy’. Especially being young and coming up, your experience is going to be super limited and they know that. You have to be so personable and likable, and you have to have good tact. You cannot be too much and be annoying, but at the same time you can’t be cold, awkward and forgetful. You have to find the sweet spot.”
