Name: Hadji Malik Gaylord
School: Norfolk State University

Q: How did you get started playing football? I started playing football in middle school. My physical education teacher Mr. Mitchell asked me would I like to play football.

Q: What separates you from all the other athletes trying to become a professional? What separates me from all the other athletes is that My passion, dedication, and responsibility for the game. Everyone goes through different things in life. I just choose to add that to the way I play the game. I love the fact that I can’t take my feelings and use towards something positive, which is football

Q: Tell us about your college choice, career and what the recruiting process was like? The recruiting process was a difficult road for. I did not know where to turn. I attended West Virginia Wesleyan for a semester. Sadly, due to financial concerns I had to withdraw. About 2-3 months, Norfolk State called and asked would I like to join the team as a preferred walk-on. I gradually accepted. Ever since then my football career at Norfolk State University took off and not once did I regret it.

Q: What would you consider to be your biggest accomplishment in your sports career so far? Being that I used to wrestle, I went undefeated my senior year. 25-0. My sophomore year at Norfolk State University, I blocked a punt and scooped it up for a touchdown against Old Dominion University.

Q: What do you consider to be one of the more important things you learned from the coaching staff? Keep that same energy and focus! My position coach in college would always tell me “if you think you stink”. What he meant was just go!!! Stop thinking and just play the game.

Q: What is/was your biggest challenge and how do/did you manage it? Losing my grandmother was the biggest challenge I went through. She was biggest fan. I used football as a coping mechanism to help me get over her passing.

Q: What is your biggest strength or X factor that you bring to a professional team? My biggest strength that I would bring to the team is heart, dedication, maturation and knowledge.

Q: Who is or has been the most influential person in your life? My daughter Chynna. She’s my heart and soul.

Q: What are your goals with football? If football does not work out, then what? My goals with football is to prove that with all the trials and tribulations that I can make it. Football to me is survival of the fittest.  If football does not workout I would then obtain my degree in sociology and become a probation officer or social worker.

Q: How did you prepare for the National Scouting Combine and what are your expectations? The way I prepared myself for the National Scouting Combine, was that I took what had. I practiced with my position coach and did drills such as footwork ways to shed blocks and tackling drills. I also worked with the NSU track coach. we worked on the 40-yard dash and how my start should be. Wind sprints and suicides were also added. The reason why I worked on that was so that I can work on my speed and stamina. I expect to make it Pro through the hard work and my drive that I put into this sport.

Q: What would be your ultimate achievement? My ultimate achievement would be to make it to a training camp but also to be an advocate for adolescents with mental health issues.

Q: If you have to compare yourself to a current pro player, who would it be and why? Bryan Cox Jr. He also can play multiple positions. He lines up inside and outside. We also have similar pass rushing abilities.
