2023 National Scouting Combine Featured Athlete Ty Castillo, LB from Wisconsin Lutheran College

How’d you end up at your current school? What was the recruiting process like?

Going to Wisconsin Lutheran College turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Growing up as a military brat meant a lot of moving, but my parents always found ways to keep me connected to my faith, whether it was by finding a new church for us or enrolling us in a Christian school. This went on until our final move to Florida. I wanted to go to a public school because I felt that there was higher competition and I wanted to give myself a real shot at the next level. Because I went to all public schools after moving to Florida, I didn’t feel as close to God as I once did because it was a different environment than what I was used to. My senior year of high school did not go as well as I had anticipated, but I believe that setback was God’s way of getting me back on track with my Faith, as I received an offer from WLC late in the recruitment process.

What gives you an advantage over other athletes at (rename this to your position)?

My athleticism, experiences, and passion are three aspects of my game that I believe make me the best small college LB in the 2023 class. My speed has been my strongest point as it has allowed me to get to the ball or a space in coverage at a high level. As a student of the game, I would pick the brains of all the coaches or older guys around me and try to add their best skills or thoughts to my style which has made me a unique player. As for my passion, I cherish the game as it shows through my work ethic, will to learn, and style of play.

What does being a student of a game mean to you?

Being a “student of a game” allows you to have a high advantage on an opponent. This has slowed the game down for me which has made me a threat to opposing offenses.

How does being a (rename to your position) reflect itself in your personal life?

I have felt that the great Linebackers of a team were always leaders. As a leader,  I’m not one to get guys jacked up to go play, but I would show my leadership in the way that I carried myself. I also was that teammate that would do whatever it takes to get the job done. By “doing whatever it takes”, I would put the team first and that has shown in my work life and within my relationships whether it be friends, family, etc.

How would you describe your work ethic?

I’m a work-a-holic. My dad has always possessed that trait as he has always been the hardest worker that I know. Seeing how he would work always inspired me to want to be the same way. I find the off-season process slightly more enjoyable than the season itself.

What do you consider to be one of the more important things you learned from the coaching staff?

WLC has taught me that there’s more to the game than just what we see on the scoreboard in the end. Once I realized that, I began to see an increase in my level of play which ultimately helped our team become more successful. We appreciated each other and the game more.  I think the program is making a huge turnaround because of how our current head coach, Coach Treske has emphasized that there is more to life than just football.

What would you consider to be your biggest accomplishment in your sports career so far?

I would say recording 20 tackles in a game that went to double OT my sophomore year. This game I had realized that I truly had the potential to be a great LB. My confidence is what normally held me back so this was a big stepping stone in my career as I became more confident in myself believing that I would be the best one day.

How did you hear about the National Scouting Combine?

I did an interview with DraftDiamonds and The GridIron Crew. A couple days after those were posted, Coach Jay reached out to me and told me about this opportunity.

Why did you choose the National Scouting Combine?

I chose NSC because I felt that it would be a great opportunity to showcase my talents in front scouts. With all the events we have throughout the week, I will be able to grab scouts’ attention with my numbers as well as my skills.

What do you hope to show people at the combine?

I want to show people how talented guys are at these small school colleges. We are highly overlooked so my goal is to pave the way for guys like us.

What was your Major?

I am currently Majoring in Business Management on my way to earning my BS this May.

Who is or has been the most influential person in your life?

The most influential people have been my parents. They both served the military which had already made them my childhood heroes. But what stood out most was my mom’s resilience through anything and my dad’s consistency in everything.

If not football, then what?

If my journey was to come to an end, I would continue my path in management as I would work towards getting a job with the company I am currently an intern for.

If you could make a positive impact on all of society what would it be and why?

If I could make a positive impact on the world it would be to serve others with purpose. We were placed here to love and serve another and I feel that in today’s world we have shied away from that.

What is something unique about you that people would find interesting?

In 2011, my family moved to Germany for about 3 years. While I was there, we always took family trips and this allowed me to see so many amazing places like Rome, Paris and Barcelona.

If you had the opportunity to play another sport professionally, what sport would you choose?

I’d be a boxer forsure. I love their workouts and I had always loved the mindset of the great Ali.

Are you involved in mentoring, a charity or do you “give back” or ”pay it forward” in your community

This previous semester, I put on an event for the Best Buddies organization to support and raise awareness. I want to continue to work with Best Buddies and volunteer at other organizations regarding those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
