2023 National Scouting Combine Featured Kicker James Kazalski

Name: James Kazalski | Position: Placekicker

School: Wayne State | Instagram: @jimmykazalski

How’d you end up at your current school? What was the recruiting process like?

After high school I went to a junior college where I played two years of soccer. After graduating from the junior college, I tried to walk-on at a Division III soccer program. After a 45-minute walk-on period the coach decided not to add me to the team. After that I took a year off and played intramurals. During the summer while I was doing my internship in Washington, D.C. I started kicking footballs in my free time. The following Fall semester I decided to walk-on to the same college football team. I went 10-10 on field goals during the tryout. As I got ready for my last kick all the varsity players circled around me and tried all they could do to make me miss. I nailed in right down the middle, and I was added to the team. As a walk-on, I was never able to make the varsity team and just played JV. After spring ball, they cut me. A few weeks before players reported back for the season, they called me, but I was not able to play again for the team due to issues in my life.

What gives you an advantage over other athletes at kicker?

My age (34) and experience. I’ve been playing arena/indoor football since 2013. I’ve played professional sports for 9 years now and have been part of every experience possibly as a kicker.

What does being a student of a game mean to you?

Trying to be the best you can be by watching film, practicing, and training, and talking to other kickers as much as I can.

How does being a kicker reflect itself in your personal life?

Being a kicker has taught me a lot of life lessons in my life. It has taught me how to work with teammates to get to the end goal(winning a championship). It also has taught me to work hard for goals in my life and has taught me to have a very good work ethic which is hard to come by these days in athletes.

How would you describe your work ethic?

When I first started playing football in 2013, I was practiced and worked out every day. Life began to get busy, so I practiced 2-3 days a week and lifted once a week. I miss the days where I could practice every day and workout 2-3 times a week. When I play at a higher level, I know I’ll get back into the flow of how I used to practice every single day.

What do you consider to be one of the more important things you learned from the coaching staff?

Willing to be a team player and always willing to put the team first before yourself. Another important thing that I have learned from coaches is to be a good listener and always work hard.

What would you consider to be your biggest accomplishment in your sports career so far?

Winning a championship in my first year as a pro athlete and playing against the Arizona Rattlers in Phoenix, Arizona after seeing them play on T.V.

How did you hear about the National Scouting Combine?

My agent, Carl Griff, is good friends with Jay Wilson. Carl put me in contact with Jay to get me on track for the USFL, XFL, and CFL seasons.  During my conversations with Jay, he mentioned the combine. He wants me to kick in front of as many scouts as possible.

Why did you choose the National Scouting Combine?

I choose the National Scouting Combine because of all the scouts and coaches that will be in attendance and to make connections with these people.

What do you hope to show people at the combine?

I am hoping to just compete and finish in the top three of each of the competition.

What was your Major?

Associate Degree – Sports Management- (State University of New York)-S.U.N.Y at Delhi

Bachelor’s Degree – Sports Management- (State University of New York)-S.U.N.Y at Cortland

Master’s Degree – Sports Management (Graduating 2024) -Wayne State College

If you could make a positive impact on all of society what would it be and why?

I like to inspire the younger generation of athletes and prove to them that it doesn’t matter what level you play if you dream big. You can make it to the professional level if you have the work ethic and desire. I want to motivate the younger generation to reach their goals.

What is something unique about you that people would find interesting?

I love to go and play bingo either at retirement homes or at casinos. Even though I never win I always talk to the people I sit with.

If you had the opportunity to play another sport professionally, what sport would you choose?

Indoor soccer or outdoor soccer.

Are you involved in mentoring, a charity or do you “give back” or “pay it forward” in your community?

When I lived in Upstate New York, I helped build houses for Habitat for Humanity. I also helped feed the homeless. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to help these charities in a while but always look to give back as much as I can.

If you could pass along the knowledge and experiences that you have experienced, what would it be?

If I could pass any knowledge and or experience to younger athletes it would be to take it all in (take a lot of pictures, explore the cities that they go to because as a “pro athlete” you could be on a team one second and be out of the league the next). Also don’t be afraid of competition. I feel competition makes everyone better. I love going up against people that are good because it makes me better.
