Name: Lionel Williams
School: Northwestern State

Q: How did you get started playing football?

When I was younger I used to always run around tackling or trying to run over my older brothers. After awhile they figured all this physical play could be of better use on the football field/

Q: What separates you from all the other athletes trying to become a professional?

My passion for the game and how I am truly a student of the game. I try my best to understand all schemes and all positions in case I get moved around, and to make my job easier.

Q: What would you consider to be your biggest accomplishment in your sports career so far?

In my sports career I would have to say that it was being able to play a role in changing the culture and attitude at NSU. Getting the winning mentality back into the program. Positively impacting others carries weight mentally as you get older.

Q: What do you consider to be one of the more important things you learned from the coaching staff?

At Northwestern State I learned not everything will go your way or how it is drawn up, but a man never submits to quitting. Always put your hard hat on and go to work.

Q: What is/was your biggest challenge and how do/did you manage it?

My biggest challenge was when I attended LSU, it was being able to sit back and understand that no matter how hard I worked that I just had to trust the process, and sometimes there is a different plan manifesting behind the scenes. I managed it by focusing on myself, competing, and improving myself. Becoming the best person on and off that I could become.

Q: What is your biggest strength or X factor that you bring to a professional team?

My biggest strength is having the ability to recognize and analyze plays to be quicker to the ball. With me it is like having a coach on the field, running the defense or just showing and letting my actions speak for me.

Q: What are your goals with football? If football does not work out, then what?

With football my goals are similar to steps because it’s a process. I want to make it to a mini camp, training camp, then of course a 53 man roster. Basically just making a way for myself to make it into this league. If football does not work, I will use my bachelors and masters degrees to fall back on.

Q: How did you prepare for the National Scouting Combine and what are your expectations?

I have been training at Elite Athlete Development in Virginia with a great strength and conditioning coach by the name of Shane Sykes. I expect to go out and compete to the best of my ability, and to let my game speak for it self.

Q: If you have to compare yourself to a current pro player, who would it be and why?

I would have to say that it would be between D.J. Swearinger and Malcolm Jenkins. Both are tremendous athletes and have not only a high IQ, but also a high motor. Plus I am very versatile like them, being able to come down and play in the box as an extra run stopper or line-up against a slot receiver or tight end. They are students of the game as veterans always looking to learn and add that to their arsenal similar to me.
