About Cody

What was the most important thing you learned during your career?

The most important thing I learned was to appreciate every single chance you get when you step onto a football field. There are so many people in the world that would love the opportunity to play football but are unable to for one reason or another. I feel extremely blessed to be able to play this game and I try to take full advantage of every time I step on the field.

What qualities do you possess that makes you a candidate for a professional contract?

I feel confident that I am an ideal candidate for a professional contact because I posses mental toughness and a strong work ethic. Playing in big games at the collegiate level, I have learned to overcome adversity and move on to the next play. Whether I am in the weight room, on the field, or working a daily job, I always strive to give my best and put all my effort into the task at hand.

What was your major and why did you choose to study that field?

My major is Sports Management. I choose this area of study because I have been involved in sports throughout my entire life and all aspects of the sports industry intrigues me.

What is your routine like as you pursue a professional opportunity?

After graduation, I decided to train outside of my home state of Pennsylvania by staying with friends and family in Florida — which eliminates the limitations of training in colder weather. My routine includes working out twice a day, five days a week. My workouts include plyometrics, upper and lower body lifts, yoga, aquatic workouts, foam-rolling and other cross training. My other two days will be primarily kicking days, alternating kick-offs, field goals and punts.

What are some of the contributions you made to your previous program? What about the local community?

I’m happy to have made an impact at my collegiate program by setting multiple school records such as field goals made (42); extra points made (168); field goals made in a game (4); longest field goal (50); 2nd in all-time points (294) In addition I enjoyed contributing to the local community by Starting the Fellowship Of Christian Athletes Club at the school, volunteering at a local church as well as giving private kicking lessons to high school athletes in the Pittsburgh area.

What is your best asset as an athlete and why will it make you successful at the next level?

I feel coachability, leadership, and my all-around athleticism are my best assets that will help me be successful at the next level. I also take constructive criticism very well. I enjoy learning things that will make me better as a player and as a person. I really pride myself on not being just a “kicker,” but a football player. I was named a captain by my coaches and fellow teammate my senior year because of the leadership role that I took on and off the field. It’s easy for a kicker to stand in the shadows and wait until he is called upon, but I like my teammates to see that I put in the same commitment and time as them. For example, conditioning for kickers was optional in-season, but while other kickers would sit out, I would join my teammates because I understand that it helped build their trust in me. I also would regularly attend our quarterback film sessions and pregame analysis meetings even though it was not required, just to learn more about our offense and our coaches’ decisions during different situations in the game.

What are your plans for a post football career?

My primary goal is to play professional football and I would feel incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to do so. However, if I am unable to, I would consider applying for the United States Army Officer Candidate School to continue to share my leadership abilities. If I am able to have a successful and long-tenured professional football career, I would like to retire somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains and run a small farm.

What is your fondest memory playing football?

My fondest memory of playing football occurred near a local field in my hometown after my high school senior season had ended. I had just finished practicing alone and was walking home with my bag of footballs. A small boy, who wasn’t more than ten years old, was sitting outside a local alternative school for at-risk youth. He said, “Hey, I know who you are. I have seen you in the newspaper for playing football. One day I want to play and wear the same number as you.” He asked if he could have one of the footballs with my name on it and I gave one to him. As I left and walked home, knowing that the little boy wasn’t able to attend a public school, or may not have some of the same opportunities as me, whatever the circumstances, it really made me appreciate everything that God has blessed me with.
