About Poppy

What was the most important thing you learned during your career?

  1. The most important thing I would have to say that I have learned is that hard work truly does pay off. One of the toughest things for me to do is be patient and being a walk on athlete at an elite college has taught me to be patient and with hard work and dedication comes a reward!

What qualities do you possess that makes you a candidate for a professional contract?

  1. I feel that I have great characteristics to help lead a team, which I have accomplished my senior year of college, coming in as a walk on athlete and being a captain my senior year, and leading my team to having one of the most successful seasons in Villanova history.

What motivates you on and off the field?

  1. Growing up watching my mom be the only one working in the household, taking care of my little sister and I has really inspired me to be self-motivated and always want to be at my best so that she has one less thing to stress about. Also, not being gifted with size has really made me the underdog my whole life and that has made me always want to work harder to prove that sized does not matter.

What was your major and why did you choose to study that field?

  1. I chose to stick with the Liberal Arts major because I honestly have no idea of what field I want to work in after my football career is over. With that being said, I was able to take different courses such as communication, criminology, sociology, and has the opportunity to expand my options of what really caught my interest. I believe that this world is built through networking and connections and with the Liberal Arts major, I feel that it shows the employees that I am capable of doing anything, you just need to teach me and I will put the same effort I did in football with working hard, earning a scholarship, and being named captain my senior season.

What is your routine like as you pursue a professional opportunity?

  1. Make sure that I am taking care of my body and staying in a routine with my trainer.

What is or are some challenges you faced in your career and how did you overcome them?

  1. One of the biggest challenges throughout my career was leaving my mother at the age of 14 and going away to high school for a better education and opportunity to play sports in college. Although my high school was an hour away, my mom could not take me and my sister to school and make it to work. Therefore, I stayed with my quarterback’s family and was a little discouraged when he went away for college and I had no offers to play football. I was then faced with the challenge of going to Valley Forge Military Academy where I lead the team to an undefeated season and still had no scholarship offers after that season. I then decided to be patient and believe that God had a plan for me and that was to walk on at Villanova and have a story to share with others who are ever discouraged.

What or who is your inspiration. How did you come to that conclusion?

  1. I have been inspired by watching Steve Smith of the Baltimore Ravens. The passion and hard edge he brings to the game is priceless and shows me that size does not stop him from being one of the best receivers to play the game. I am also inspired by the loyal family, friends, and fans that have followed me throughout my journey thus far and being able to make them happy by just playing the game of football. It has inspired me to continue to follow my dreams and make it to the top.

What are some of the contributions you made to your previous program? What about the local community?

  1. We run the Andy Talley Bone Marrow drive that I have worked all four years that I have attended Villanova University and it is a drive that allows people to become donors to those in need of a bone marrow transplant. It is an amazing experience watching one of our fellow teammates save one’s life and gives me the opportunity to possibly save a life as well. i have also helped out each year with homeless shelters and been a volunteer at the special Olympics each year.
What is your best asset as an athlete and why will it make you successful at the next level?
  1. Route Running, short area quickness, ball skills, motor, and most importantly I am coachable!

What are your plans for a post football career?

  1. I would like to connect with people within the Villanova family and find different jobs that I may be interested in. I have been told I could be a good coach, so that could be a possibility. I am really big on fitness and wouldn’t mind looking into being a trainer.

What is your fondest memory playing football?

  1. First game of my senior season playing in the carrier dome for the first time and I return a punt for 67 yards and make sports center top ten #2. Although we lost that game by one point, my teammates gave it their all and I will never forget that game! Also, my sophomore year returning a punt for a touchdown in the Georgia Dome is very memorable because it pretty much sealed the deal for my scholarship the follow year and no other player has returned a punt for a touchdown in my coaches 32 years of coaching.
