AF1 Coach J.R. Wells Returns to the 2026 National Scouting Combine Representing the Washington Wolfpack
Naples, Florida — Paradise Coast Sports Complex | January 6–9, 2026
The National Scouting Combine is pleased to welcome back AF1 Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator J.R. Wells for the 2026 National Scouting Combine, where he will once again attend alongside other AF1 coaches to evaluate talent on behalf of the Washington Wolfpack.
Wells previously participated as part of the AF1 contingent at last year’s Combine, where he also assisted in coaching free agent athletes during on-field drills. His hands-on approach and willingness to engage directly with athletes made his presence a welcome addition, and his return further strengthens the professional coaching representation at the event.
What AF1 Teams Are Looking For
When evaluating talent at the 2026 NSC, Wells is focused on players who can make an immediate impact in the arena game.
“We’re looking for a dominant, athletic offensive lineman — a true pulling guard type who can play every position on the line, including center,” Wells said. “On the perimeter, we’re targeting a highly explosive wide receiver — shifty in the slot, strong through contact, able to make defenders miss in space, finish tough, and make contested catches.”
Preparing for the Arena Game
Wells emphasized that athletes transitioning from outdoor football must train with the arena game in mind.
“Train for speed, quick-twitch movement, and conditioning,” he said. “The arena game is faster, tighter, and more reactive. Your ability to change direction, accelerate, and stay fresh matters just as much as size or strength.”
Advice for NSC Athletes
For athletes hoping to earn an AF1 roster opportunity, Wells kept his message direct.
“Show up ready, not hopeful. Compete on every rep, be coachable, and bring energy that stands out. Opportunity favors preparation — the players who separate themselves are the ones who treat every moment like it matters, because it does,” Wells said.
“Stay ready. You ain’t got to get ready.”
Building Real Opportunities
National Scouting Combine Founder and CEO Jimmy Kibble emphasized the value of having returning professional coaches actively involved on site.
“J.R. Wells’ return to the National Scouting Combine speaks to the credibility of this event and the quality of athletes who attend it,” Kibble said. “When coaches come back year after year — not just to watch, but to coach, evaluate, and interact — it creates real opportunities for athletes and meaningful connections to professional football.”
The 2026 National Scouting Combine will take place January 6–9, 2026, at Paradise Coast Sports Complex in Naples, Florida, bringing together athletes, coaches, and decision-makers from across the football landscape.
The National Scouting Combine is proud to be the official scouting combine partner of AF1, welcoming AF1 coaches and front office personnel to the 2026 event. With league decision-makers on site throughout the Combine, athletes have the opportunity to compete in front of those actively building rosters, reinforcing the National Scouting Combine’s role as a trusted pathway between prepared athletes and professional arena football opportunities.
