Jay Wilson Returns to Wheeling Miners, Expands Role While Continuing Leadership with National Scouting Combine
With more than six decades of football experience, Jay Wilson continues to impact the game both on the field and within the National Scouting Combine.
Wilson, a longtime Director with the National Scouting Combine, is returning to the Wheeling Miners of the American Arena League. After previously serving as Director of Player Personnel, he will now expand his role by adding Special Teams Coordinator responsibilities.
A Lifetime of Football Knowledge
Wilson’s football journey spans over 60 years, providing a rare perspective on the evolution of the game. His background in coaching, scouting, and player development has made him a trusted voice within the Combine.
At the core of his philosophy is a belief in athleticism and preparation:
“You can teach a good athlete to play football, but you can’t teach a football player to be a good athlete.”
That mindset continues to shape how athletes are evaluated, with a focus on movement, versatility, and overall performance.
Impact on the National Scouting Combine
Since joining the National Scouting Combine in 2017, Wilson has helped evaluate and guide athletes toward professional opportunities.
His approach emphasizes more than measurables:
- Consistency in performance
- Attention to detail
- Professionalism on and off the field
He consistently reminds athletes they are being evaluated at all times — reinforcing the Combine’s mission of identifying complete, pro-ready talent.
Expanded Role with the Wheeling Miners
As Wilson returns to the Wheeling Miners, his expanded role reflects his experience and versatility.
Along with overseeing player personnel, he will now serve as Special Teams Coordinator — a phase of the game that demands discipline, execution, and attention to detail.
His dual role strengthens the Miners while reinforcing the direct connection between the Combine and the professional level.

Wilson remains an integral part of the National Scouting Combine, continuing to evaluate and mentor athletes while contributing at the professional level. His dual role creates a direct bridge between evaluation and opportunity, giving athletes insight into what it takes to advance. His presence ensures the Combine maintains a real-time professional perspective, where athletes are measured not only by performance, but by their readiness for the next level.
